Qantas strengthens Asian presence

Believe it that when Qantas identified Asia as its saving grace in its restructuring plans three years ago, it meant business. The Australian flag carrier has been increasing its presence in the region the way that Asian airlines may themselves feel outdone.

Qantas has signed its first reciprocal codeshare agreement with China Southern Airlines, improving travel options for customers of both airlines in their respective countries. For Qantas, Guangzhou becomes an important gateway to the vast Chinese hinterland, and for China Southern access within domestic Australia and beyond to New Zealand.

Qantas already has an extensive codeshare alliance with China Eastern Airlines and OneWorld partnership cooperation with Cathay Pacific. It also has codeshare arrangements with EVA Air of Taiwan. Through Jetstar its presence has been enhanced in Singapore, Vietnam and Japan. It is expected to launch Jetstar Hong Kong in the new year with China Eastern as one of the partners.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said: “Partnership is key to our strategy in Asia.” He added, “The Qantas Group presence has never been stronger in Asia. When you factor in our direct passenger and freight services, as well as Jetstar and our codeshare partners, around one sixth of our total revenue now comes from Asia.”

It is clear that geography is no hurdle to Qantas becoming an Asian airline.
